Magnus Okuonghae celebrated being named Colchester United’s new captain with an opening-day goal – and then pledged to lead by example this season.

Okuonghae, who was unveiled as the club’s skipper last week, scored the U’s opener in an entertaining 2-2 draw with Oldham Athletic at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

It is Okuonghae’s second stint as Colchester skipper, having previously been given the role as a young player under former boss Aidy Boothroyd in the 2009-10 season.

The 29-year-old defender says he learnt a lot from that spell – and aims to use that experience to his advantage.

Okuonghae said: “I’m honoured to have the armband and I’ve been here a long time.

“Hopefully, I can lead the boys and we can try and do something special."
