Essex University’s Jason Veares narrowly missed out on winning gold in the Haringey Box Cup, at Alexandra Palace.

The welterweight boxer lost his final against Kelvin Fawaz on points in the multi-national tournament in London, where more than 300 boxers of all weights and classes took part.

After comprehensively out-pointing Jubilee’s Robert Winkworth in the semi-final, Veares took on the former ABA champion from Stonebridge.

Veares’ crisp left jab helped him take the centre of the ring, catching his opponent with left jabs and right-hand counters.

The Essex University boxer clearly won the first round and although Fawaz landed a number of punches in the second round, Veares regained control.

Fawaz steamed into attack but Veares connected with several right hands and left hooks that let his opponent know how much he wanted gold.

The Stonebridge boxer attacked in the last ten seconds but was met by a spirited return from Veares, who felt justifiably that he had won.

And despite Fawaz getting the verdict, Veares showed he belongs at this level.
