Alex Lynn admits the dream start he made in the GP3 Series was nothing more than what was expected of him by watching Formula One team bosses.

The 20-year-old racing driver from Dunmow won the opening GP3 event of the season at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona to head the early championship standings.

Lynn, racing for the Carlin team, drove a car decked out in the Red Bull team colours to signify his position as a member of the Formula One outfit’s Junior Driver Programme and things couldn’t have started better for him.

He qualified in pole position, set the fastest lap time, went on to lead every lap and took the chequered flag in his first-ever GP3 race.

Watching the up-and-coming driver’s achievement was Red Bull’s motorsport adviser Dr Helmut Marko, who was quick to offer his congratulations as Lynn prepared to mount the podium at the end.

However, the Dunmow race ace isn’t getting carried away.

He said.“Carlin were pleased and I know the guys at Red Bull were happy, but it’s only what they expect.

“They are a winning Formula One team and wouldn’t have picked me (to be in the Junior Driver Programme) if they didn’t think I was capable of delivering like that.

“So doing it is only what is expected of me."
