Colchester United boss Joe Dunne fears a controversial Premier League B team league could prove detrimental for Football League clubs.

FA chairman Greg Dyke last week put forward plans to introduce a newly-formed League Three by 2016-17.

The proposals have been put forward by an FA Commission, with the aim of increasing the number of home-grown players for the national team.

Under the plans, B teams made up of young professionals would be eligible for promotion and relegation up to no higher than League One.

Football League clubs would see a £30m cash pool per season, as part of the revamp.

But Dunne is wary of how any new division will affect the fabric of English football’s century-old pyramid.

Dunne said: “I welcome the proposals and I can understand them wanting to make that level of football for young players more competitive.

“But the further down the pyramid you get, the more detrimental it could be.

“You have to understand the heritage of the Football League and the clubs within it."
