Town to lose free car park

Businessman Eric Hobbs submitted plans to turn one of Halstead’s last remaining free car parks into a 43-home housing development.

Shoppers and traders have enjoyed free parking on the Bayer site in Colchester Road, Halstead, for four years.

* The League of Friends of Halstead Hospital voiced their frustration at the slow progress of rehab unit plans.

The group has raised £1.25 million, but plans for the unit at the town’s hospital were brought to a standstill because of decisions to be made by care trusts.

TEN YEARS AGO

October 9, 1998

The Bridge Street branch of Hume’s Bakers closed after 15 years because owners Ann and Dennis Hume wanted to cut down on their business commitments.

They vowed to continue trading as normal at their other shop, in Halstead’s High Street.

* A warning was given to residents who leave milk money on their doorsteps for the milkman to collect – move it or lose it.

The warning came after Halstead police discovered there had been a spate of milk money thefts across the town.

50 YEARS AGO

October 10, 1958

A couple travelling to Spain were held up at Madrid airport as customs officials inspected a dartboard they were transporting.

Mrs Page, of Mount Pleasant, Halstead, tried to explain what it was by pretending to throw darts at it. Officials were none the wiser, but let the couple enter the country.

* A £19,000 scheme to modernise pre-war Halstead council houses was approved by the urban council.
