Family find home in flames

A family were shocked to return from a shopping trip to find their Castle Hedingham home in flames.

Neighbours thought smoke had been coming from a bonfire.

* Halstead traders called for parking charges to be lowered to attract shoppers back to the town in the wake of a six-month traffic nightmare.

Repairs to sewers in Halstead’s High Street had caused some traders in the town to lose up to £1,000 per week in turnover, they said.

TEN YEARS AGO

October 2, 1998

Two 17-year-old Halstead girls, who stopped handbag snatchers in their tracks, received a special crime prevention award.

Lisa Stock and Lisa Griffiths ran to the aid of the victim and shouted at the thieves until they dropped the bag.

* A veteran driver passed his test at the grand age of 71.

Eric Davies, of White Horse Avenue, Halstead, had been behind the wheel since 1948, but never took an official test after having been taught to drive while in the Army.

50 YEARS AGO

October 3, 1958

Workers from Toppesfield and Great Yeldham found a human skeleton while digging an overgrown garden of an unoccupied cottage.

Bones, including the skull, from the plot in Baythorne End were sent to Scotland Yard for examination.

* An articulated lorry laden with six tonnes of meat overturned while negotiating a bend near the church in Earls Colne.

A crane was needed to lift the lorry up, but the road was closed because it was slippery with water and oil.
