Town wins CCTV fight

The Halstead Gazette helped the town win its fight for CCTV funding.

The announcement was welcomed by traders, residents and councillors.

* An eight-year-old boy was in a spin when he got stuck in a washing machine.

Fire fighters came to aid of the youngster, of The Tythings, Halstead.

TEN YEARS AGO

September 25, 1997

An attempt to shatter a land speed record with an electric car failed.

Electronic problems on the vehicle, built at the Hunnable industrial estate, Great Yeldham, were blamed for the failed attempt.

* A Halstead man, 35, broke his leg in three places after doing a fundraising parachute jump for Great Ormond Street Hospital, London.

50 YEARS AGO

September 26, 1958

A Halstead farmer’s shortcut home in the early hours of Saturday and the discovery of an abandoned car and two safes, led to an all-night police hunt for the suspects.

Men from Kent were caught and charged with breaking into the booking office at Hedingham Railway Station and stealing the safe, as well as stealing a safe from a solicitors in Halstead.

* Rosabelle Osborne, of Gosfield Hall, died at the age of 82, leaving £18,792 gross, of which she gave £100 to a former maid.
