Claire's dinner lady of the year!

Claire Gibney, a head cook who helped reopen St Andrew’s Primary School kitchen in Bulmer, was named dinner lady of the year.

The Maplestead resident had no previous training as a school cook before she joined the school.

TEN YEARS AGO

September 18, 1998

Chain pub Wetherspoons scrapped its plans to move to Halstead.

The pub had planned to move to the Wisebuy store, Bridge Street, Halstead, but withdrew its planning application four months after it was submitted.

* Green-fingered Halstead residents were commiserating after the town failed to win a prize in the Anglia in Bloom competition. Brightlingsea won top prize.

50 YEARS AGO

September 19, 1958

The new steel castings dressing factory in Colchester Road, Halstead, was officially opened by the Rt Hon RA Butler.

Mr Butler said he felt honoured to have been asked to perform the ceremony.

* The first case to come before Halstead magistrates, involving a speeding motorist being detected by radar, was heard this week.

The defendant had been caught travelling at 48mph along Sudbury Road, Halstead.
