Campaign to bring CCTV to town

The Halstead Gazette launched a campaign to bring CCTV to Halstead after residents, traders and councillors said a mobile CCTV was not enough.

Hundreds of readers signed our Keeping an Eye on Halstead petition.

* A Halstead man was in court after turning his home into a drugs factory. He had been growing large cannabis plants using Miracle-Gro.

TEN YEARS AGO

September 4, 1998

A Halstead woman, whose sister was abused in residential care, praised Essex County Council for the steps they were taking to stop ill treatment in homes.

* The owners of Halstead’s Greenwood School, which closed suddenly at the end of term, were being urged not to sell the property.

50 YEARS AGO

September 5, 1958

Lightning struck a transformer behind a home in Hedingham Road, Halstead.

An eye-witness said there had been a big bang, a round ball of fire like a full moon and smoke pouring out of the transformer.

* Colne Engaine Village Produce Association staged another grand show on the recreation ground.

There were 490 entries.
