Paperboy airlifted to hospital

A 15-year-old paperboy, of Balls Chase, Halstead, was airlifted to hospital after a road accident.

He had just left his home to deliver papers in the town.

* Thieves stole the porthole of Halstead’s beer brewing vat in Weavers Court, which had been held on by eight screws.

TEN YEARS AGO

August 21, 1998

A Halstead man was arrested after being drunk and disorderly and butting a policeman on the day of his father’s funeral.

* Castle Hedingham Parish Council clerk Helena Carter was nominated for the national title of Clerk of the Year 1998. She said she was flattered.

50 YEARS AGO

August 29, 1958

A crowd of 61,000 people attended the “open house” day of 20th Tactical Fighter Wing at Wethersfield base and saw some thrilling flying by crack jet pilots of the USAF and RAF.

* Mr E Mayes, of High Street, Earls Colne, celebrated his 95th birthday and received many congratulations.

He was the oldest resident in the village.
