Girl Guides again scooped the Young Person’s Award in the Halstead In Bloom competition with their bumper crop.

* Donald Earey’s butchers – DR Earey and Son butcher’s based in Swan Street, Sible Hedingham – celebrated 70 years of business.

Mr Earey thought it was probably the oldest butcher’s in the area.

TEN YEARS AGO

August 21, 1998

Strawberry, the first pony at the Danaher Animal Home in Wethersfield, died after being diagnosed with Cushing’s Disease. Readers had raised more than £2,000 for medication.

* Valerie Sparkes, of Wakes Colne, died a year after being reunited with her long-lost sister Carol Walisoliso after 43 years apart. The sisters only got to see each other once.

50 YEARS AGO

August 22, 1958

A 13-year-old Ridgewell boy, who was a Hedingham School pupil, drowned at Clacton-on-Sea while on a Sunday school outing.

* A welder was fined £1 after being charged with leaving his car stationary and unattended without lights on in White Horse Avenue, Halstead.
