Blow to residents of fire-hit flats


ONE YEAR AGO

Residents of 12 flats in De Vere Road, Earls Colne, were told it may be a year before they could return home.

The flats were damaged by a raging blaze and the gallons of water that firefighters used to put it out.

* A much-loved lurcher dog was returned to its rightful owner, after being stolen from a dog show at Hunt Kennels, Earls Colne.

The dog had been found in Kent, covered in thorns and thirsty, but generally well.

TEN YEARS AGO

August 14, 1998

Three Buddist monks visited Halstead to bless newly-opened Thai Lights in High Street, Halstead.

They travelled from their temple in the Midlands to the restaurant.

* A popular florist, who feared he may be forced to stop trading in Halstead, was back in business.

Phil Robinson was offered a new reasonably-priced pitch outside Solar supermarket after the rent rose on his old pitch.

50 YEARS AGO

August 8, 1958

After corresponding for four years, two penfriends met for the first time. Helen Suckling, of Whitehorse Avenue, Halstead, met Yolande Humily, of Orleans, France.

* Famous Halstead painter Charles Steed was challenged by a Daily Express Irish weather girl while on holiday in Brighton.

He answered the question : “On what Bernard Shaw play is My Fair Lady based?” and won £1.
