Double baby birthday joy for family

A mum celebrated a double dose of delight when her daughters both gave birth on the same day.

Carolyn Emery, of Conies Road, Halstead, said it was a “fluke” that her daughters Janine and Toni gave birth to boys within an hour-and-a-half of each other.

* The cousin of a Second World War pilot travelled from Canada to visit the site of a plane crash in Finchingfield, after its discovery by a local historian.

The Canadian’s cousin had made an emergency landing, resulting in the deaths of five crew members.

TEN YEARS AGO

July 31, 1998

Further sightings of the “Beast of Essex” were reported.

A woman, who was reading, looked up to see the panther-like creature chasing a squirrel in a graveyard in Colchester Road, Halstead.

* A 22-year-old backpacker from of Halstead died in Nepal, when he was hit by a shower of falling rocks.

50 YEARS AGO

August 1, 1958

When a couple in Lamb Lane, Sible Hedingham, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary, they received a special gift from their youngest daughter, who had emigrated to Australia.

They heard her voice for the first time in four years, thanks to a tape she had sent them.

* About 80 people attended the annual puppy judging of the East Essex Hunt at the Hunt Kennels, Earls Colne.
