Fire ruins stock at factory

Arsonists set fire to about 20 pallets outside a Halstead factory.

Stock at Verine was ruined by smoke damage.

* Brothers Jason and Darren Gill took over Ray Osborne’s delivery service in and around Halstead.

The pair admitted to getting lost in the countryside on their first couple of rounds.

TEN YEARS AGO

July 24, 1998

Former employees of R Hunt and Company in Earls Colne were reunited.

It was ten years since the company closed.

* Halstead Town Football Club confirmed they would play Eton Manor to mark the 50th anniversary of opening their Rosemary Lane ground.

50 YEARS AGO

July 25, 1958

Five men from the Halstead area and three brothers from Sible Hedingham, who tried to extricate an American pilot from his crashed and burning aircraft at Sugar Lane Farm, Sible Hedingham, were presented with the Queen’s certificate of commendation.

* A house in Great Maplestead was struck by lightning.

The large brick chimney was hit and much of it fell on to the lawn.
