Plans for live reindeer to appear at Canvey’s Christmas fair will go ahead, despite criticism from campaigners against animal cruelty.

Reindeer have attended for the last few years, but a petition has been launched claiming that the animals are being exploited.

The petition has accumulated nearly 400 signatures in a matter of days, but Canvey Town Council, which has organised the event annually for ten years, remains undeterred.

Town mayor, and member of the Canvey Independent Party, John Anderson, said: “It was a very popular decision to incorporate the reindeer. But every year it seems one or two people seem to think the reindeer are being exploited.

“That could not be further from the truth. The reindeer are very well looked after, with plenty of straw and food.

“The reindeer have been a great addition to the event, and are so popular with kids as well as mums and dads. All I can say, is ask anyone who has been, or comes along on the day, and looks at the reindeer and the people looking after them, there is no exploitation and there is no cruelty.”

The petition has been launched by Rob de Silva, in Crewe, who spotted the plans for live reindeer.

It reads: “They do not seem to realise the utter cruelty involved in these events when live animals are used simply as props. Reindeer are extremely sensitive creatures that can be easily stressed out. Loud crowds and noises can be very stressful for them.

“This event can still go ahead without exploiting live animals, and it will still be just as enjoyable for the children. Leave reindeer where they belong and out of Santa’s grotto.”

Despite the criticism, Mr Anderson and the rest of the council remain undeterred, stating the reindeer are a fully fledged part of the event.

He added: “We are committed to organising a great event for the whole community, and we are really pleased as a town council that we can put the event on. We are certain that they are well treated and the town council would never enter any agreement if there was a genuine concern.

The annual event with lights switch on is booked for November 25, from noon in the town centre.
