A man has been disqualified from driving for six months for providing false details to police after being caught speeding.

Anthony Appleton, 63, of Rose Road, Canvey, was caught by a speed camera in Runnymede Road, Canvey, while travelling at 37mph in a 30mph zone in his grey Renault truck on July 18, 2015.

Over the coming months he received two written notices informing him that Essex Police would be prosecuting him but failed to reply, insisting he never received them.

A police officer then visited Appleton and handled him a final reminder notice. Once again he failed to reply.

On Monday, February 13, he appeared at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court for failing to give information relating to the identification of the driver of a vehicle. He was disqualified, fined £230 and ordered to pay £90 in court costs.

Adam Pipe, Essex Police’s Casualty Reduction Manager, said: "Appleton provided false information and failed to reply back to three written notices – one that was handed to him by a police officer.

"He persistently ignored our notices hoping that we would not prosecute him.

"This sentence sends out a strong message to drivers who fail to acknowledge the consequences of their actions - we will bring you to court.”
