A BUSINESSMAN told campaigners to “enlarge” their vocabularies as plans for a new fine dining restaurant and bar were thrown out.

Lee Molossi, of Bull Lane, Rayleigh, was refused planning permission to convert Sutton’s furniture shop, in Eastwood Road, Rayleigh. He wanted to open a fine dining restaurant and bar open until 2am.

The plans sparked objections from members of the community. During a public consultation, residents argued there would not be enough parking. They also labelled the venue inappropriate as it sits next to a day nursery and backs onto several houses.

In response to concerns, Mr Molossi addressed the public gallery - which was packed with more than 100 concerned residents.

He said: “All this worry you have inflicted upon yourselves could have been avoided by referring to the planning portal. Had you done this, you would clearly see the plans are for a fine dining restaurant and would allow Rochford Council and myself to make our community a wealthy one.

“I’m surprised the term fine dining has not been understood. I’m not sure if this is through lack of education or ignorance. I would therefore happily enlarge your vocabularies.

“A fine dining restaurant by Leo Molossi does not attract clientele that would behave like lager louts or disrupt the local area.”

Planning officers had recommended the plans for approval as the venue was in line with council policy and located close to Marco’s, also in he same road - but they were unanimously overruled by councillors after an hour-long debate.

Cheryl Roe, Tory councillor for Trinity ward, said: “It’s too far from the High Street and there is no parking. I also feel no resident should have to put up with the noise that will come with this kind of venue.”

Mr Molossi expressed plans to appeal the decision.

Taking to Facebook to vent his frustration, he said: “You watch me. I will create wealth for this town and everyone who appealed against this will be named and shamed. It is our next generation we have to think of here.”
