TWO dental workers have shared their experiences after an eye-opening trip to Greece to help Syrian refugees.
Dentist Salma Daou, 26, and dental nurse Lorraine Wellmen, 44, both work at Parmar Dental in Southchurch Road, Southend, and made the trip after being moved to help when watching the news.
Salma, who lives in London, said: “The charity Healthpoint Foundation organises trips over there, so we travelled with them out to Thessaloniki, in the north, where there were about 15 different camps and more than 100,000 refugees. On the whole, they were fantastic, some of the nicest people we’ve met. I’ve worked abroad before but this was different because they had been through so much trauma.”
Mother-of-three Lorraine, of Tantelen Road, Canvey, added: “It was heartbreaking and a lot to take in. Some of them lost everything and had nothing more than the clothes on their backs. They were pleased we were there, but it was a shame we couldn’t do more. We are going to go back when the next wave of refugees arrive.”
Practice manager Debbie Berry said: “We are all so proud of them for doing what they did.”
