TRAIN services have been delayed and suspended after a lorry hit a railway bridge. 

The incident, on Thorpe Hall Avenue saw a lorry hit the railway bridge and is currently blocking the road in both directions.

Trains between Southend Central and Shoebury are currently being delayed or suspended. 

A spokesman from c2c said: "We hope the lorry will be removed shortly, emergency services are on the scene. 

"Services between Southend Central and Shoebury have been delayed or suspended at the moment."

The ambulance service was called at 11.24am this morning and had three ambulance crews and an ambulance officer on scene.

An ambulance spokesman said: "We received a call at 11.24am today to Thorpe Hall Avenue, in Southend, to a road traffic collision involving a lorry that hit a railway bridge.

"Three ambulance crews and an ambulance officer attended.

"Two men, believed to be in their 20s, were in a car behind the lorry and had to brake sharply. One had a head injury and another had chest pain.

"Both were taken to Southend University Hospital for further treatment.

"A pedestrian – a woman in her 20s – who was struck by a piece of debris had suffered an ankle injury.

"She was assessed at the scene, but did not require transport to hospital."

A passerby said: "It is a mess. It looks like the lorry was filled with polystyrene. The rear trailor of the lorry is quite twisted. 

"I dont know how it happened but it looks like two vehicles were also involved and have the polystyrene on their cars.

"Luckily it is not a very busy road so traffic is flowing around it quite easily. 

"I dont think anyone was hurt badly but I saw three ambulances."
