THOUSANDS of people took part in an annual fun walk which raised funds for more than 100 charities.

The annual walk, organised by Basildon and Billericay MP John Baron, took place at Barleylands Farm, with about 2,500 people attending.

Because of the event's growing popularity, it was decided to stage it on the opposite side of Barleylands Road in an open field, providing more space.

The total amount raised will be revealed at a presentation evening in September, when cheques from the walk's "bonus pot" will be awarded to selected charities and voluntary groups.

Mr Baron said: "This year's walk has been a great success with around 110 charities benefitting.

"Our family of volunteers deserve special praise both for another great barbecue and for ensuring our move to the new location went well.

"Over £40,000 has already been donated into our bonus pot by our corporate and individual sponsors.

"It was a great team effort all round."
