A NEW Sadlers Farm featuring a series of mini-roundabouts could be created on Canvey to ease congestion.

Essex Highways is looking at plans to create a new roundabout set-up at Waterside Farm to help motorists get on and off the island.

If plans go ahead, four mini roundabouts could be created at the Canvey Way, Somnes Avenue, and the two Canvey Road junctions.

Sadlers Farm was notorious for its multiple mini roundabouts before theywere removed in a £63million roadworks scheme, which dragged on for years.

Ray Howard, Essex County Council’s deputy member for highways, said: “There is talk of possibly turning Waterside Farm roundabout into mini roundabouts at each junction, similar to how Sadlers used to be.

“I know some schemes are being prepared to see what could help to alleviate the congestions and traffic flow for Canvey, “To get a new road in today, I live in the real world, we have environmentalists, who are against it and we will have a fight on our hands and it’s a slow process.”

The old Sadlers Farm junction, contained five mini-roundabouts, before the improvement scheme transformed the junction in 2012 to create a link road to take traffic directly between the A13 on the London side of the Sadlers Farm, and the Chelmsford bound A130.

Motorists faced months of travel chaos during the works which frequently brought Benfleet and the surrounding areas to a standstill.

In March, Essex County Council leader David Finch and highways boss Rodney Bass said extra lanes could be added to Canvey Way as part of a £60million investment to improve traffic flow around the island.

Mr Howard said: “We want something to alleviate the traffic.

“To widen Canvey Way, we would have three separate lanes and in the morning have two lanes coming off the island to help commuter flow and in the evening we would need to change it to two lanes coming in.

“I have not stopped fighting for Canvey and Rodney Bass says highways is taking this seriously and said we are doing all we can to help the residents of Canvey.

“The thing is, even though Canvey is my home, it doesn’t just affect Canvey. It goes up to Sadlers and affects the whole of south Essex.

“A car broken down on Long Road can cause traffic that goes back to Sadlers. It’s a real problem.

“I understand these are all options that can be looked at.

Whatever happens we will need a full consultation with the public.”

A spokesman for Essex Highways said: “It is too early to be talking about the scheme, nothing has been decided.”
