TOP ten Record Store Day recommendations by Richard Onslow, South Records.

1. Alex Chilton – Jesus Christ (500 copies)

Alex Chilton was a genius. This is taken from the third Big Star album, as bleak and beautiful as albums can get. Essential.

2. Red House Painters – boxset (500 copies)

The first reissue of Red House Painters’ early Nineties 4AD albums in a swanky pizza box and on bronze vinyl, no less. Original copies of these albums regularly fetch three figures.

3. Dexys Midnight Runners – Don’t Stand Me Down (1,000 copies)

This is my joint favourite album of all time. Derided at the time because it didn’t sound like Come On Eileen. Only been reissued once before (on Creation Records), this one comes on burgundy vinyl.

4. Father John Misty – I Love You, Honeybee (500 copies)

Unless something amazing happens, Father John Misty has already made the best album of 2015. This is a heartshaped 7” of a non-album track and an exclusive acoustic version of an album track.

5. Frank Wilson/Chris Clark – Do I Love You (1,000 copies)

Soul fans and record collectors know all about this record. Only a couple of copies of Wilson’s exist, with one selling for £25,000 a few years ago. Chris Clark was one of Motown’s underappreciated singers who never had the hits she deserved.

6. Foo Fighters – Songs From the Laundry Room (1,500 copies)

Dave Grohl is the RSD ambassador this year, and this 10” has four tracks – demos, unreleased tracks and a cover.

7. Mclusky – Mcluskyism (1,000 copies)

First time on vinyl for the much missed Mclusky’s best-of. Some great lines among their many great songs, most unprintable in the Echo. Fans of swearing should check out Gareth Brown Says.

8. The Germs – Forming (500 copies)

Reissue of the debut single from the Germs. Originally released in 1977, it’s considered the first true LA punk single. Considered a bit of a joke at the time, their legend has only grown – now they’re revered.

9. The White Stripes – Get Behind Me Satan (2,000 copies)

First time on vinyl for their fifth album. Originally only promo copies were on vinyl (to help prevent pre-release leaks), which now sell for upwards of £300.

10. Graeme Miller & Steve Shill – Moomins theme (900 copies)

The theme tune to much-loved Eighties kids show, comes with a Fuzzy Felt sleeve!
