CCTV has been released as police continue to investigate a brutal attack which left a man with serious head injuries.

A man in his twenties was attacked with what is believed to be a hammer when he was near Booze Up on London Road, Westcliff.

He received head injuries and required stitches in the unprovoked attack at about 3.45am on Sunday.

Following initial reports in The Echo, the police have released CCTV of potential witnesses to the attack in the hope they can come forward and help the investigation.

Investigating officer Det Con Mark Sawyer said: "This was a very nasty unprovoked attack on an innocent man.

“I am appealing for these two people to come forward to assist with the investigation."

A 32-year-old man from Liverpool, a 29-year-old man from Liverpool, a 15-year-old boy from Southend, a 14-year-old boy from Southend and another 15-year-old boy from Southend were arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm on Sunday evening.

They were later released on police bail pending further enquiries. The 14-year-old boy from Southend has been bailed until Tuesday March 3 and the others until Wednesday March 4.
