FORGET Blue Monday, these students made sure the week got off to a cheery start.

South Essex College students and c2c staff greeted commuters at Pitsea, Benfleet, Southend Central and Thorpe Bay.

They aimed to combat the lows of Blue Monday, supposedly the most depressing day of the year.

Frankie Gordon, business student, said: “We’ve had quite a fun time, it’s nice to make people happy on this cold and wet morning.

“Feedback from passengers was very positive and included comments like ‘What a lovely way to cheer people up on a Monday, thank you’ and ‘It’s certainly made my journey to work more enjoyable.”

Business enterprise executive Josie Aplin, who organised the event, said: “We’ve had a super response from the commuters on the platforms.

“Opportunities like these are a brilliant chance for students to develop their communication and confidence skills and also their persuasion skills – although next year, I think we will offer a fruit option for those commuters sticking to their healthy eating resolutions.”

Representatives from the Samaritans were also present at the stations, giving people advice on mental health issues.
