STYLISTS at a beauty salon acted quickly to get flames under control after a fire erupted in one of their back rooms.

RJ Nails and Beauty on London Road, Leigh, called the fire service at about 4.20pm yesterday after a fire started in the room, spreading from one container of chemical and alcohol-based product to another.

The fire then spread to a small amount of paper used for aromatherapy candles before setting fire to a couch.

However, before fire crews from Leigh and Southend arrived, staff used a fire extinguisher to get the flames under control before closing the door to the back room.

Fire crews wearing breathing apparatus then used a hose reel to put out the fire before using a pressure fan to get the smoke out.

Leigh fire officer Wayne Davey said staff at the salon acted correctly in the way they dealt with the emergency.

He said: “The people who owned the shop did the right thing, they used a fire extinguisher to knock back the flames then closed the door and called us.”

Officer Davey added there was minimal damage to the salon and it is expected to begin trading again by tomorrow.

Crews left the scene at about 6.40pm.
