A HEARTBROKEN widow is still receiving post for his beloved wife from Basildon Council...nine months after she passed away.

Brian Randall, 75, told how he has nowmade six emotional pleas to the authority since Pamela, 74, died from cancer in December.

He thought the problem had been resolved until the council again sent Mrs Randall a letter last week threatening her with a fine for failing to fill out the electoral register.

Mr Randall, from Billericay, who was married to his wife for 54 years, said: “I’m very upset by all of this. It’s been nine months since my wife died, but when I get post in her name it just stirs everything up again.

“I thought it was all over until I got another letter last week.

“Every day now I am scared I’m going to get another one.

“In the first fewweeks after she died I expected it, but I can’t believe the council can still be so stupid. I just want it to stop.”

Mr Randall said one worker he complained to blamed the mistake on information not being shared between departments.

The widower was also left confused after being sent a letter himself which said he was being taken to court for not paying his council tax.

The couple always paid by direct debit, but when Mr Randall took his wife’s name off the council tax bill his payment details were wiped without him knowing, meaning his money was not automatically being taken out of his bank account.

After being contacted by the Echo, a spokesman for Basildon Council said Mrs Randall’s name had finally been removed from its register.

He added: “Changes to legislation, which only came into effect in June, now mean we must have sight of two pieces of documentary evidence of a deceased elector, for example: a death certificate or notification from the registrar’s office. We apologise for the obvious distress caused.”
