X FACTOR star Matt Cardle is under stress, according to a close friend.

The former painter and decorator will be up against 13 other acts in the second live show of the 2010 ITV series tomorrow.

Matt, 27, from Little Maplestead, is still favourite to win the show, according to bookies William Hill.

But pal Darren Gear, 22, said the star-in-the-making was “a bit down” at the moment.

He said: “I think the pressure is getting to him a little bit.

“He’s gone from playing in a pub to playing in front of millions and he’s finding the paparazzi a bit surreal.

“A lot of national papers have been pestering him and he was getting a bit stressed out about it.

“But he’s still loving the whole experience and I don’t think he will crumble.

“Matt has a unique voice and he’s so versatile. He can sing blokes’ songs and girls’ songs.

Darren, who lives in Braintree, said clothing companies were “throwing” garments at Matt in the hope he would wear them on the show.

Last week was the first time Darren had seen his pal wearing new jeans and a new shirt, rather than his usual outfit.

Escape nightclub, in Copford, is getting behind Matt, with 20ft-long banners.

Damien Stone, manager of the London Road venue, is a friend of Matt and wanted to do something to show his support.

He said: “I met Matt a few years ago through a mutual friend. He came to the club many times and we got on really well.

“He spent New Year’s Eve with us here at Escape, so we’ve partied hard together. I’ve also had the pleasure of being in Matt’s company while at friends’ houses and we’ve asked him to sing. He’s quality, such a talented guy.”

Matt is joint favourite to win the talent show, but even if he does Mr Stone reckons it won’t change him one bit.

He added: “Matt is such a genuine guy, so humble and respectful.

“I was with him in London this week when we met up for a few beers and even with the media spotlight and celebrity status he is now acquiring, he’s still the same."
