A CHARITY fundraiser for a woman with breast cancer has been marred by an angry villager who sent a threatening note to the venue after the event.

Friends organised a special afternoon of family activities on Sunday for Holly McFarlane, from Colchester.

The 30-year-old is undergoing chemotherapy after being diagnosed in April while travelling in Australia.

Holly is hoping to donate some of the money from the birthday bash to Colchester’s Mary Barron Suite, which is caring for her.

But despite organisers saying the event was a success, raising £1,000, the Strangers Home Pub, in Bradfield, was sent hate mail complaining about the noise.

On its Facebook page, the pub said: “We at The Strangers Home played host to a charity fundraising event on Sunday afternoon.

“We had music playing from 1pm to 5pm in the afternoon in our pub garden, stalls, face painting and fun things for families.

“What an absolutely fantastic day, with great donations to forward to the charity.

“Then we receive this from obviously not a very charitable person - shame on you.

“To everyone else that supported the charity we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”

The letter said: “I understand you moved here from an area where thick idiots were common place.

“You have moved to an area where people are more considerate and intelligent regarding their neighbours.

“I would suggest that you give your next musical function a lot more thought or the lads will move in and do some ‘night-time modifications’ to any caravan on your site.

“You have been warned.”

Holly said she had a lovely time at the event and was upset someone had complained.

She said: “It did put a bit of a dampener on it.

“I felt bad for the family who own the pub who were lovely and let us use the pub.

“It was just a lovely day and it was open to anyone, so if anything I would have thought neighbours might have wanted to come along.”

Jeanette Wood, Holly’s mum, said she saddened at the letter after such a lovely event for her daughter.

She said: “The Strangers Pub family were so good to host the event, Holly’s friends worked really hard to organise this festival for her 30th birthday and as a fundraiser for breast cancer awareness.

“Everyone involved gave their services for free, including the band Cushti who are friends of ours.

“My 85-year-old mum was there as well as Holly’s other nan, who has just gone through breast cancer herself.

“Everyone worked so hard and I was so very proud of them all - whoever wrote that letter is surely lacking in a charitable attitude.”

The post has been shared across Facebook, including the Manningtree Uncut page with residents hitting back at the letter.
