A brand new exhibit celebrating the achievements of women in wartime is now open in Purleigh.

Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome in Hackman’s Lane opened their third permanent exhibition, Rule Britannia – Women in the Great War, at the end of last month.

The exhibition, which was funded by Leader and Essex Heritage Grant awards, was welcomed by John Whittingdale and officially opened by Lord-Lieutenant of Essex, Mrs Jennifer Tolhurst.

They were joined in celebration by representatives from the Rural Community Council of Essex, the SMGWA board of trustees and the volunteer curatorial team.

CEO of Stow Maries Aerodrome Ian Flint said: “This exhibition explores the incredible contribution made by women in the Great War and how their activities changed their role in society for ever.

“It was a fitting tribute to these ladies that the exhibition was co-curated by Dr Viv Newman, historian and author and opened by Mrs Jennifer Tolhurst HM Lord Lieutenant of Essex.”
