CLACTON Rotary Club had donated more than seven tons worth of equipment to people of third world countries.

The international committee of the Clacton Rotary club decided they wanted a “hands on” project that would quickly answer some basic needs in third world countries this year, and decided to focus on Physionet.

Physionet is a charity which refurbishes walking aids, mobility aids and wheelchairs, transporting them in forty foot containers to countries where they are needed to such places as Sri-Lanka, Fiji, Syria, Zimbabwe, and South Africa.

A spokesman for the club said: “We approached various sources and with the assistance of the local manager and employees of Veolia, other local sources and the general public, we have in just five months been collecting these materials storing them in a barn and then shipping them on to Physionet.

“So far we have filled two 7.5 ton lorries with this badly needed equipment.

“The last load alone contained 38 wheel chairs 56 zimmer frames 128 pairs of crutches and over 57 other mobility aids.”
