FED-UP residents say drivers are still trying to drive through a road which has been closed for almost three months.

Main Road, in Mundon, was closed on June 18 and is expected to remain shut until August 24 for work by Essex and Suffolk Water.

It means the road is completely shut to all vehicles between the junctions of Burnham Road and Blind Lane except for access.

But it's not stopping some motorists who seem determined to use the road and have been abusive to residents when warned to turn around.

Margaret Hall, who lives in Main Road, told the Standard last month it was frustrating to see so many motorists having to turn around.

She has now warned the problem is not getting any better.

Mrs Hall explained: "It's now in the fourth week of the road closure at the junction and still drivers are not heeding the road closure signs.

"There are many of them, plus many holes in the carriageway which are coned off but unlit.

"There's been abuse from some drivers and they all turn around in ours or our neighbours driveways when they reach the dead end.

"These works are due to go on until at least August 23, so there could be a lot more irritating driving to come.

"Just this week there have been large tractors and trailers - many delivery lorries and vans, a fire engine, irate motorcyclists plus the usual night time cars screeching to a halt at the security fencing."

A spokesman for Essex Highways said: “The works here are for a very long section of vital water main renewal.

"The road closure is clearly signed, and it is absolutely wrong of drivers to ignore the signs – it might be worth noting that car insurers are likely to disallow any claims for collisions for people driving deliberately into a closed road.

"Our inspectors check sites regularly for correct signs, diversion route and that contractors are working efficiently to keep the time the road is closed to a minimum."
