COMPETITORS got knee-deep in quayside competitions at the Manningtree Regatta.

Spectators lined the River Stour in Manningtree to watch two days of sailing races including about 30 boats from dinghies and cruisers to smack boats.

On Sunday the fun began for landlubbers as they stepped into the mud for a morning of races and tug of war.

Stour Sailing Club commodore Sarah Howlett said: “The glorious weather at the weekend ensured that Manningtree Town Regatta was very enjoyable for both participants and spectators.

The mud sports on Sunday morning included children and adult races.

“With six teams taking part the winners were the Red Lion Ladies Team and Mistley Rugby Club.

“The children’s races included a tug of war between the children and adults which was won by the children to the delight of those taking part and the watching crowds

“The firework display on the Saturday night, funded by local businesses and Manningtree Town Council, was spectacular and enjoyed by everyone along the beach and Quay Street as well as local residents.

“The prizes for both day’s sailing events was sponsored by ilecs - a local lift consultancy company based in Mistley.

“On Sunday we were thrilled to have the Border force coastal patrol vessel and the Harwich RNLI’s latest vessel come along to moor at the quay to welcome visitors aboard.”
