COLLEGE staff are getting behind colleague Nicky Withycombe who hosts her tenth and final Starlight Walk this Saturday.

Mrs Withycombe recruited a number of walkers from Colchester Institute to take part in the event to help raise money for the Cancer Centre Campaign.

The campaign is the college's charity of the year and has also been supported by the Daily Gazette.

The 10-mile Starlight Walk takes place from Playgolf, Lexden, with Sir Bob Russell cutting the ribbon at the start line at 7.30pm.

Mrs Withycombe, college welfare and safeguarding officer, has organised the walk with her friend Karen Robertson for nine years and has raised almost £70,000 for charity.

Will Quince, MP for Colchester, will be coming to show his support to the walkers and gymnast and Commonwealth gold medallist, Alice Kinsella, will be coming to show off her medal.

The final walk will end with a fireworks display at Playgolf.

Alison Andreas, principal and chief executive of Colchester Institute, said: “It is a fantastic achievement for Nicky to have organised nine years of successful walks and wonderful to see colleagues supporting Nicky for her final walk whilst raising money for our charity of the year. We wish all those involved the best of luck."

Caroline Bates, Colchester Hospitals Charity’s head of fundraising said: "We have had wonderful support from the Colchester Institute staff and students for the Cancer Centre Campaign and so it is especially appropriate that they will be supporting the final Starlight Walk. The Cancer Centre Campaign is drawing to a close now and we would not have been able to get this far without the involvement of people like Nicky, Karen and the staff and students at Colchester Institute.”

The £3.25million target for the cancer centre is close to being reached and the life-changing centre is within months of being built.

It will bring all cancer services together in one location at Colchester General Hospital.
