SAINT George’s Flag will fly outside Clacton Town Hall during the World Cup.

William Hones, of Marine Parade East, Clacton, had called for the flag to be flown in support of England when they compete in the Fifa World Cup in Russia.

Tendring Council bosses originally told Mr Hones there is currently no policy for flying flags for sporting events.

The authority is looking into having an additional flag day to celebrate England’s patron saint on St George’s Day every April 23 after calls by Clacton councillor Andrew Pemberton.

A report will go before the council on July 3.

But chief executive Ian Davidson has agreed for the flag to be flown during the World Cup before that happens.

He said: “The leader of the council Neil Stock and chairman Mark Platt have requested that the flag be flown on the days the England football team are playing.

“Therefore the flag will be flown throughout the day of the matches.

“The committee has proposed that a policy is prepared, but the flag will be flown for the World Cup as the policy will not be agreed until after the tournament.

“I think we all hope that the flag will be needed for many days throughout the tournament and not just the first three matches.”

The Union Flag is usually flown outside the town hall, in Station Road, but the council also flies flags to mark Armed Forces Day, Merchant Navy Day and Commonwealth Day.

Mr Hones had written to councillors to support Mr Pemberton’s motion – and called for it to be extended to flying the St George’s Cross during the World Cup.
