A NEW initiative to encourage men to get healthy has launched in Maldon.

BLOKES! aims to get men across the district together and making a positive change in their wellbeing.

The focus is mainly for men over 55 who might find getting involved in activities a bit more difficult.

The initiative has been set up by Maldon and District Community Voluntary Service who are based in Holloway Road, Heybridge.

The launch event on Saturday, June 9, included a presentation from Chris Booth from Men’s health charity Chaps.

Other providers such as Walking Football, Wellbeing Walks, FitSteps and Park Runs, and the Men’s Shed were also in attendance.

A free BMI test by Ace Weight Management was also available.

The new group will host monthly events.

These can include activities such as sport, walking or cookery.

Linda Allen from Maldon and District Community Voluntary Service said: “Blocks is for men who want to add years to their life and life to their years.

“We learnt at the presentation on Saturday that one in five men dies before they are 65 and there are a number of health inequalities faced by men.

“However, one of the key issues is that men don’t think enough about their health and Blokes is set up to help that.”

They are also encouraging men to volunteer to help out with the activities.
