UNION Jacks were flying high at street parties held for the Royal Wedding.

Brights Path on Maldon High Street held a colourful and vibrant street party on Sunday to celebrate the marriage of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

More than 110 people turned out for the event, which saw singers and dancers entertaining the guests enjoying afternoon tea on the tables lining the street.

Mark Salisbury, owner of Brights Path, said: "It was a fabulous day, the sun shone and we had more than 110 guests turn out for the entire day.

"We had some great entertainment, plenty of dancing and music including singers and musicians who played soul from the 50s and 60s.

"It truly was fantastic."

Elsewhere in the district, Purleigh celebrated the wedding by holding a community picnic at the village cricket ground.

A voluntary group organised the day which saw guests arrive to watch the wedding at the club, before being treated to a cake sale, BBQ, kids activities, and a live cricket game where Purleigh's team managed to beat the visiting team from South Woodham Ferrers.

The event was well attended and put on to raise some community spirit and to raise funds for the Purleigh community playground project. Whilst the total amount raised has not been calculated, it is estimated to be several hundred pounds.

In the Dengie, Knightswood Day Care Centre in Asheldham spent Saturday celebrating the wedding by watching it on tv whilst having a buffet, with everyone getting into the spirit of things, including dressing up and wearing fascinators even the staff.

Carina O’Mahoney, one of the day’s organisers, said: “We did a big build up from the beginning of May by decorating the board (Royal Coach and Horses drawn by Georgia Coker) giving them the themed pictures to colour in, they have been so excited about the wedding and looking forward to the day.

“Everyone enjoyed themselves and it was a lovely celebration.”
