The summer officially started last weekend when the Colchester Morris Men launched their season with the now traditional three performances in the town centre. For most Friday evenings between now and the end of August they will be performing England’s centuries old dancing tradition with a total of 15 displays at various locations in the area starting this evening in Rowhedge.

The ridiculously talented Mercury Young Company steps proudly back onto the Studio stage, this time in an adaptation of the classic Robert Louis Stevenson tale by playwright Bryony Lavery.

This vibrant, eclectic show from a local artist definitely going places is going to be over far too soon so get along and see it before it ends.

A welcome return from the wonderfully jangly pop bubble gum quartet that is the brother and sister team made-up of Romeo and Michele Stodart, and Angela and Sean Gannon. Support on the night comes from Isle of Man’s Penelope Isles with their waves of ambient delays, fuzz guitar noise, and melodic pop hooks.

5. Gardens Open and Fun Dog Show, Donyland Hall, Fingringhoe Road, Fingringhoe, 2pm to 5pm.

One of the best country house fetes in the area makes a more than welcome return. There’s the moated manor house of the hall itself as well as its iconic black swans, home-made teas, plants and a nature trail as well as special guest RHS advisor, writer and broadcaster Lucy Chamberlain.
