A BAND is hoping to inspire people to get stuck in the mud after penning a new song about the world famous Maldon Mud Race.

Stuck in the Middle, who are based in Southminster, have recorded the eponymous song to help support this year’s event.

In total £1 from each sale will go towards the charities supported by the race.

The song makes reference to the race’s origin and how well supported it is each year.

Lyrics include “through the mud and the slime, and the stench and the grime, they make the 500 yard dash.”

The trio of Julian May, Jon Greaves and Angela Gardner have recently become a quartet with new member bassist Beth Pratt.

Mr Greaves said: “We’ve come up with some songs about the area that people have liked.

“So we thought ‘let’s see what else we can write about.’

“I had a little tune on my head and Angela put it to paper and the song was made.

“For this particular song, we have also enlisted the help of guest musicians Gary Bennett from Heybridge on the melodeon, Janice Higgins from Burnham playing the penny whistle and dancers from the Dark Horse Morris Men based in Maldon.”

Mrs Gardner said the band won’t be taking on the race anytime soon.

She added: “We’re a bit long in the tooth for the race.

“We thought we might give that a miss but we will be attending and performing as well as selling our CDs.”

The single will be featured on an EP, along with three other songs.

This year’s Maldon Mud Race takes place in Promenade Park, Maldon on Sunday, June 10.
