Existing flood defences in Heybridge need to be “put right” according to villagers.

Flooding has been an ongoing issue in the area with the Standard regularly reporting on the problem throughout the years.

Despite the council securing money for a new flood defence scheme residents say the existing defences need to be improved.

Don Benson, chairman of Heybridge Residents Association, said: “The existing system is 200 years old and it has been neglected.

“It could be put right very quickly but it would cost money – but nowhere near as much as the brand new scheme.

“The existing scheme is not up to scratch at the moment because of a lack of maintenance.

“The report on the cash for the new scheme said it should have benefits for all residents of Heybridge.

“Even if the new system is installed we still need the existing one working – so it is all a little bit back to front.”

Mr Benson said more needs to be done to combat the problem which has been going on for decades.

He said: “It is a stupid situation and it is something which could be put right so quickly.

“Heybridge needs improvements in terms of flooding, the roads, medical care and schools – they are all kaput.” Discussions are ongoing.
