A SOCIETY will be holding a talk on beer and brewing next week.

The Maldon Society will be holding their “Beer and Brewing” talk at the Cygnet Room in the Swan Hotel on Maldon High Street.

On Thursday March 1 in the Cygnet Room, behind the Swan Hotel in High Street at 7.45pm, John Boyce will give the story of a Maldon based brewery.

During 1996 to 2000, the brewery was located in Brentwood with Burntwood Bitter soon being recognised as one of the best bitters in the country.

Maldon Gold was first brewed following the move to Maldon in January 2001. In 2007 it was voted not only the best Golden Ale in Britain but also the overall second best ale in the country by CAMRA.

In 2011, The Mighty Oak Brewing Company won the Supreme Champion Beer of Britain Award with "Oscar Wilde Mild".

Since then they have been brewing five or six times every week to keep up with demand. The company has now expanded into large premises.

John, with his engineering background and the help of a local firm, now have new brewing equipment and expanded the brewery.

The company has appointed a new Head Brewer, Charles Board. Charles has brewed internationally, and has a MSC in brewing and distilling.

He will be introducing a new range of Craft Ales for everyone to try.

The talk begins at 7.45pm with doors open from 7.15pm. Donations are welcomed.
