A football match is being held to honour a man who died of a brain tumour.

Friends and family of Lee Castell are seeking to run the event at Halstead Town Football Club in his memory.

Mr Castell, who died in November aged 36. had been planning to organise the match himself in a bid to tick off one of his bucket list items.

He had been arranging the fundraiser alongside close friend James Martin, who has led the way in completing the finer details for the event.

Mr Martin said: “Having met and spoken to Lee on a number of occasions to ‘get the ball rolling’, we started to put together the necessary measures for a football event.

“It is now my intention to carry out the charity football match and cross off the event that was on Lee’s bucket list, as well as bringing the family together again and raising money for the Brain Tumour Charity which the event has been registered with.”

Mr Castell was first diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2013.

After undergoing a successful operation to remove the tumour, it had appeared that he would make a full recovery.

However, tests showed that the tumour had returned in July 2017 and despite being given five years to live, Mr Castell died four months later surrounded by his friends and family.

Lee’s wife Leila said there has already been a lot of interest in the football event.

She added: “James has done a lot of the work himself and put the event up on Facebook. It got a lot of shares quickly.

“We want it to be a positive thing and raise awareness.

“Lee was also a registered organ donor so if we can inform people about that as well we will be pleased.”

The event will take place on Saturday, April 28, at Halstead Town Football Club, which is based off Rosemary Lane.

Gates will open from 12.30pm and the match will kick off at 1.30pm.

Those attending the match will have the chance to enjoy a barbecue, bar and cake stalls. There will also be a number of child friendly activities taking place such as face painting and a bouncy castle.

All proceeds from the event will be going to The Brain Tumour Charity.
