A WOMAN going into labour at Colchester Presents' Christmas lights switch-on was used a case in point during a heated debate on public safety.

Tory activist Jeremy Hagon criticised a lack of crowd control, heavy vehicle barriers and an emergency services' route at the popular event, while speaking during Have Your Say at this month's full Colchester Council meeting.

He said: "I witnessed parents becoming agitated as they attempted to exit the book store on to the High Street to watch the final moments of the event.

“There was no room to move and even being 6ft 4ins, I found it impossible to see the stage from about ten meters away.

“Later that evening, residents who attended the event had taken to social media to express their concerns over safety at the event.

Halstead Gazette:

“Over 370 comments were made on this specific issue alone.

“One woman required medical attention and was taken to Colchester General Hospital.

“Her friend was unable to leave the Burger King restaurant she found herself in due to the crowds, to assist with the patient’s two children.

“Reports of people being trampled and squashed were mentioned in this forum by concerned residents.

“The main area near the stage has been described as mayhem."

However, public safety boss Mike Lilley (Lab) joked she enjoyed herself so much it brought on labour.

Then getting serious, he added that she was due to give birth before attending the switch-on.

He also said a review is underway, as is protocol after each town centre event.

He said: "As soon as I know answers, you will know the answers."

Mr Lilley said despite the alleged number of online comments, no complaints were lodged officially.
