A TEENAGE hero went to the aid of a woman who had an epileptic fit while he was having dinner in McDonald’s.

Jay Stacey was in McDonald’s in Tollgate with his grandparents when he saw a chair flip over.

Jay, 13, a St John Ambulance cadet, jumped into action when he realised a woman was fitting on the floor.

The Philip Morant School and College student used his medical training with the charity.

He made sure the woman’s airways were clear and found out what he could about her medical history.

Jay said: “I was just about to leave when I saw someone’s legs on the floor. I ran over and kept her on her side and kept her mouth open so she didn’t choke.

“I looked for medical alerts and asked someone to call an ambulance.

“She kept coming in and out of consciousness and kept fitting.”

The woman, who is believed to be in her forites, asked Jay to grab her bag which contained her medical notes.

As she was also sensitive to light, Jay asked for a coat to be held up around the woman so she would not fit again.

Jay said it was a natural reaction to help. He said: “This is what I am trained to do, I just did it without thinking.

“When you are thinking about it it does make you quite nervous but when it actually happens you know what to do.”

The woman suffered multiple fits and was taken to hospital.

Jay wished her good luck before she went.

He said his grandparents were proud with how he handled the situation.

He has been with the cadets for more than two years and has carried out 109 hours of service.

In the long term he wants to train to be a doctor.

He said: “It’s always different, you never know what’s going to happen.

“Sometimes there’s heart attacks and fits and other times there’s cuts and grazes.

“I enjoy helping people and treating them, it’s satisfying as you can see the difference you have made.”

A member of staff at McDonald’s who was working at the time praised Jay for his cool head and quick response.

He said: “I rushed over as I thought the lady had fallen over but she was having an epileptic fit.

“This young lad rushed over and made the lady comfortable.

“He kept all chairs and furniture out of the way while I went to get a manager and call an ambulance.

“He stayed with the lady the whole time. He was brilliant.”
