A MAN has been sent to prison after he was caught speeding twice in Colchester.

Officers sent out a notice to the owner of a Peugeot 206 after it was caught speeding in Mersea Road in both April and May.

On April 16 the car was caught driving at 37mph in a 30mph limit. The second time, on May 13, it was driving at 41mph.

Investigations showed the driver had been disqualified from driving at the time of the offences due to ten separate previous convictions for driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Officers visited his house after he failed to respond to the notices.

Kevin Gill, 48, of Berefield Way, Colchester, admitted to being the driver on each of the speeding offences and appeared at Colchester Magistrates’ Court, October 11.

He was sentenced to three weeks in prison for each disqualified driving offence to run consecutively, was further disqualified for 18 months and ordered to pay £115 victim surcharge.

Investigating officer Roy Keyes said, “Drivers who are caught breaking the speed limit will be sent notices accordingly.

"These notices will not go away so ignoring them in the hope they will disappear will not work.

"This case is proof that we will act on any driver who does not wish to comply and in this instance a prison sentence was given for a prolific offender who thought he could get away with driving while also disqualified.

"Speeding costs lives so know your limits while on the road.”
