A DANGEROUS driver from Clacton who assaulted three police officers has been jailed.

Police were called to reports of a white Ford Transit tipper van driving erratically on the A133 in Weeley at around 4.20pm on December 3 last year.

It was then reported the vehicle had hit the verge and central reservation before colliding with a Mercedes Sprinter van.

When an officer attempted to arrest the driver of the Transit, he was assaulted and suffered a knee injury.

Another officer then helped arrest driver James Powell.

Powell, 38, of St Osyth Road, assaulted two other police officers after being taken into custody.

He admitted dangerous driving, GBH and common assault at Chelmsford Crown Court in May.

On Monday, he was sentenced to a total 18 months in prison and a further 18 months on licence.

He was also banned from driving.

Acting Chief Insp Darren Deex said: “James Powell is a dangerous and violent man and I’m pleased he is now behind bars.

“I find it galling he was comfortable using such aggression and force in this sustained attack against a police officer.

“The officer in question has been left with a serious knee injury which could take him years to recover from.

“This case highlights the kind of abuse and dangers our officers have to face on a daily basis and the courage and professionalism with which they deal with them.

“I hope Powell will use his time in prison to reflect on his actions.”
