A TRIO of avid golfers are taking on a marathon golfing challenge for charity.

Andrew Weston, of South Woodham Ferrers, son Matthew, and friend Richard Moffat, of Braintree, are taking part in Macmillan Cancer Support’s Longest Golf Day on Friday.

The challenge will see them take on four rounds of golf consecutively at Braintree Golf Club, in Kings Lane.

Andrew said: “We did it last year for the first time.

“When we turned up at the course it was extremely wet and windy but we still managed to do it.

“We found the third round the most difficult because you are starting to get tired but you’re not yet close enough to see the end.

“We ended up having done 45,000 steps.”

Last year the team raised £1,090 for Macmillan, £290 for Guides Dogs UK and £330 for Parc Essex.

This year the local charity which they are supporting is Witham, Braintree and Halstead Home Start.

Andrew said: “We are hoping to raise £1,000 for Macmillan.

“Most of the money we raised for Parc we collected on the day with donations so hopefully we will get a bit more out of that.

“Braintree Golf Club have kindly agreed to let us use the course again for free this year.”
