I HAVE been reading with interest the exchange of letters in recent issues of the Standard between Stephen P. Nunn and PJD Wilkins regarding Edward Bright, the ‘Fat Man at Maldon’, and where he actually lived.

Indeed, I look forward to a swift resolution of this matter so that the current blue plaque on Church House can be moved to the correct location.

On another matter, the article titled ‘Town entrance needs symbol’ in last week’s issue intrigued me.

In that piece, local resident Sarah Quayle made her case for the council to seek an arts grant to install a ‘symbol’ to not only improve the roundabout between Limebrook Way and Maldon Road but also to formally welcome visitors to the town.

Sarah suggested a flag or a sail which would symbolise Maldon’s maritime heritage; both excellent ideas.

However, I have another suggestion.

Why not move the statue of Byrhtnoth from the extension on the Prom and place it on the roundabout?

It would make a great statement at the western ‘gateway to Maldon’.

After all, like the blue plaque on Church House, the statue is also in the wrong place.
