CELEBRITIES will be playing around as they take part in a golf match for St Helena Hospice.

Sporting stars including Grand National winner Bob Champion and former world champion boxer John H Stracey will be taking part in the event.

The golf day is being organised by Steffi Shilton, whose husband, Peter, England’s most capped footballer, will also be taking part.

So far ten teams of four have signed up for the golf day which is being held at the Essex Golf and Country Club in Earls Colne.

But Steffi, who is an ambassador for St Helena Hospice, said she is hoping four more teams will join in and she said there are still places available for the gala evening.

She said: “I want to make it a really good day and I am hoping it will be a success so we can repeat it year after year.”

Other sporting stars who was due to take part in the golf day on May 15 are former Olympic 400 metre runner Derek Redmond and ex-Nottingham Forest and Sheffield Wednesday footballer Nigel Jemson.

Steffi said more players were also due to take part.

In the evening, there will be a gala dinner with speakers including Mr Shilton and performances by comedian Johnny Mac, musician Tony James and singer Alison Jennings.

A charity auction will also be held.

The cost of playing in the celebrity golf match is £100 per player which includes the cost of the round and evening dinner.

Tickets for the gala evening alone cost £49 a head.

Proceeds from the day will go to the hospice, which supports people in north east Essex with an incurable illness and offers support to them and their families.
