THINGS are certainly looking Up for this Colchester-based electro indie dance duo.

That's Martin Wagdin and Rob Veater, better known on the local music scene as UP.

Following gigs in and around town, as well as plenty of on-line airplay all over the world, the pair can next be seen at the Colchester Arts Centre this weekend providing more than capable support for one of the best electronic bands in Britain, Grumbling Fur.

"The main intention forming UP was to just have fun," explains synth player and producer Martin. "A lot of music is so serious these days and we just wanted to be the opposite of that.’’

Forming last year after Martin invited vocalist Rob Veater to sing during a DJ set at a party, the two musicians merged their love for Nineties dance music, indie and retro video games to come up with a refreshing new sound.

Despite having worldwide plays online from countries such as America, Europe and even Korea, the Colchester duo are still keeping things local, recently performing at the Art Centre's On showcase gig last month.

Rob adds: “The venue is great. We went down really well, it was really unexpected as we were quite different to the other acts on the bill that night. There has always been a reasonable music scene around Colchester but I think that a lot of young people in Colchester who like electronic music aren't catered for.

"Hopefully we can be the ones that can provide that for them in the future.’’

As well as international success the electronic duo are making waves locally, with four plays on BBC introducing along with many other radio stations jumping on to the unique UP sound.

“It is gratifying to have somebody from the BBC say that your stuff is worth playing on the radio so early on into our career’’ says Rob.

Martin adds: "We are just trying to make the music that we want to make, and if people enjoy it, then we will have found our audience.’’

UP play the Colchester Arts Centre this Saturday, February 25, supporting Grumbling Fur alongside Ipswich-based Radio Orwell.
