SHOTGUN-wielding would-be raiders attempted to raid a Burnham newsagents in the early hours.

Martin’s Newsagents, on Station Road, was attacked by thugs believed to have been brandishing a shotgun and sledgehammers on Monday morning.

They attempted to break in to the store at 5.20am while no-one was working, taking swings at one of the windows and the door, leaving noticeable damage to the glass.

The robbery attempt has worried some residents in the area.

Victoria Huntshall, 78, said: “I heard about it later that day and was shocked. A shotgun and a sledgehammer sounds like they had thought about it, it isn’t just someone taking an opportunity. Thankfully it happened early in the morning. There was no-one about really.

“I worry what they might have done if someone had tried to get in their way and they had those weapons on them. I walked past there earlier and they have caused quite a bit of damage. The door is boarded up and there is a big smash in one of the windows. I hope it doesn’t cost them too much to fix.”

Martin Samson, 42, added: “I don’t like the idea of these sort of people coming round here with weapons like that, wanting to break in to places. No break-in is nice, but to use a shotgun to try and do it is disgusting.

“They’ve put a sheet of wood over the door so I’ve not seen how bad the damage is.”

A spokesman for McColl’s Retail Group said: The health, safety and wellbeing of our customers and employees is of utmost importance. We are working closely with the relevant authorities in response to this incident.”

A spokesman for Essex Police added: "Police were called just before 6am on Monday, January 16 to a newsagents in Station Road, Burnham-on-Crouch, following reports of an attempted burglary.

"Damage had been cuased to the front of the shop after a man attempted to gain entry by smashing the door. It is believed that shortly after, another suspect shot at the window, leaving a hole. Nothing was taken during the incident.

"Anyone with information is asked to call Essex Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
